Characteristation – a guide for singers when performing arias in concerts

Drawing on my research and having developed my own ideas about best practice for characterisation, I present here 8  recommendations for best practice for students and professionals alike when presenting a concert of arias :

Recommendation 1: Fully understand the text

Recommendation 2a: Ideally, learn the whole role if you can

Recommendation 2b: Ensure some background research is undertaken

Recommendation 3: Research the background to the opera

Recommendation 4: Know your concert space

Recommendation 5: Set a narrative trajectory for an opera concert

Recommendation 6: Use verbal introductions and/or programme notes

Recommendation 7: Consider the use of props, set and other characters

Recommendation 8: Consider clothing carefully
